On Transparency
The DPA specifically addresses the principle of transparency by requiring that controllers provide data subjects with certain information about the processing of their personal data.
The DPA states that the data subject be notified BEFORE the entry of his or her personal data into the processing system of the controller, OR at the NEXT PRACTICAL OPPORTUNITY.
Layered notices are a form of approach to providing privacy notices.
In a layered notice, basic information is provided in a short initial notice and further, more detailed information is available should a data subject wish to know more.
Other forms of approach to providing privacy notices are:
(i) Just-in-time notices (a notification box pops out after clicking a button)
(ii) Dashboards
(iii) Visualization and use of standardized icons
