On the Film Talk to Me
Any movie that does not rely on jump scares is a plus in my book. Talk to Me is genuine horror. Although the plot is not perfect (e.g., why was the effect of over-possession on Duckett and the main character different than that of Riley, who naturally kicked the ghost away like a disease?), it can easily be forgiven due to the fun ride from start to finish. Moreover, the film's thinly veiled use of the occult as a metaphor for fun but easy-to-abuse drug dependence works as a sublime message for kids (and adults?) who watch the movie.
The main character is annoying (I feel you, Hayley) with her narcissistic, clingy, and angsty teenage personality. It works within the context of the film, but man, I could not root for her. I know she is being deluded sometimes, but even without the ghosts she is just so unlikable. When her eventual demise came, I even heaved a sigh of relief.
Nevertheless, all of the actors are good (and by all, even the main character) and it surprised me that most of them are actually novices. The cinematography and editing are forgettable, but it did shine through during the one-take at the beginning of the film and the scenes with the characters playing around with the occult hand.
A24 never fails to pick a good film to produce and distribute. I heard there is a sequel coming up. I hope that's good too.
4/5.
