On Apple vs Android

Moving stuff from Facebook for archival purposes.

I am originally a Samsung boy but then moved to using an iPhone in 2019 after I lost my old Android to carelessness.

The iPhone is a great product. Apps work seamlessly, and "it just works." The ecosystem is very good. Moving from my iPhone to my iPad to my wife's Macbook, AirPods in tow, is one smooth experience. Privacy is also great; Apple is one of those companies that seem to be less likely to sell or expose your data.

But Apple does not fit my use case. I love using apps that cannot be found on "official" app stores, like emulators, Stremio, third-party Reddit apps, and SponsorBlock on YouTube. I know sideloading is possible in Apple, but it's more work than is necessary. I should know because I did sideload apps on my iPhone using a developer's certificate.

When I heard that the EU is going Matthew Perry's gunboats on Apple's ass, I held hope that things would change. Maybe the walled garden will finally open. Unfortunately, Apple's response is lackluster and basically frustrating for people who know exactly the spirit of the Digital Markets Act. Apple will go through every effort to still lock down the thing. Notarized apps, vetted app stores, EU only, the list goes on.

Exasperated, I sold my iPhone and iPad and got myself a Samsung phone and a Xiaomi tablet. The apps do not work as seamlessly as Apple, and the OS is not as friendly (I spent two weeks just tweaking the settings to my liking), but I believe Android is a lot more fitting for my use case. It's a lot cheaper, too.

Maybe I'll go back once Apple decides to be more open. For now, I'm back to Android, baby.
